Georgina MacMillan - ‘Evening Colours’
This project reflects on the idea that stepping into clubs or groups outside of school, work, or home allows us to momentarily shed the roles those environments impose. Over the course of three months, the artist spent time each week with the cadets at Cumberland Basin in Bristol, observing how individuals of varying ages came together, bonded, and eagerly engaged with skills they might never encounter in their day-to-day lives.
Rooted in a personal history of joining clubs to seek out new communities and reinvent the self, the work is both documentary and introspective. Alongside capturing the cadets, the artist found a growing fascination with the surrounding water—its shifting colours and light became a quiet metaphor for inner freedom, fluidity, and the parts of ourselves that remain untouched by structure.
